If travelling:

  • from Adelaide - You will arrive at Wartook Gardens in the late afternoon. Your itinerary will largely depend upon your interests.

  • from Melbourne - Depending on what time you leave, there may be time to view some attractions before you arrive at Wartook Gardens.

  • from The Great Ocean Road - There will be an opportunity to view some parts of the Grampians before you arrive at Wartook Gardens.

Suggested Itineraries:

At Wartook Gardens explore the gardens, sit and relax and observe the birds, have an early morning or evening swim, or go for a walk and observe the large mobs of kangaroos.

Some of attractions that can be seen in the Grampians National Park are listed in the tours and walks below. You may also wish to visit the many wineries, Horsham, Mt Arapiles or Little Desert National Park.

Jeanne and Royce will happily give advice and provide maps to ensure a great visit.

If your time is limited, choose carefully what it is you wish to see and do and then make sure that you allow yourself sufficient time. There is so much to see and do in and around the Grampians National Park.

Day 1: The Central Grampians

The Balconies Visit Zumstein, MacKenzie Falls one of Victoria's largest waterfalls - always a good flow as it is the source of Horsham's water supply (1½ hours return to the base) - Lake Wartook, one of the oldest man made reservoirs in Australia.

Reids Lookout, where you can comprehend the size of the Grampians National Park with views in all directions. The walk to the popular "Balconies" is only 45 minutes return.

Boroka Lookout gives magnificent views over the plains and lakes, to Stawell and the hills around Ararat, and you also look down on Halls Gap and Lake Bellfield.

Into Halls Gap for a late lunch, and then visit Brambuk the National Park and Cultural Centre, before returning by the same route to Wartook Gardens.

Day 2: The Northern Grampians

Travel through Wartook, turn into Roses Gap Rd and visit historic Troopers Creek and Roses Gap.

Walk to Beehive Falls (1hr return) and the turn south at Rose Gap to Heatherlie Quarry (1hr return) about turn towards Mt Zero.

Visit Golton Gorge and proceed to Hollow Mountain Car Park (Hollow Mountain walk 1 hr return) before going on to Mt Zero and Flat Rock You may visit Olive plantations and Aboriginal shelters before returning to Wartook Gardens.

Day 3: Winery Tour

Roses Gap RoadTake the Roses Gap Road to the Western Highway, through Stawell to Great Western (1 hour by car) where a number of wineries can be visited. For further information visit our Wineries information page.

Day 4: Rest Day

Spend a day at Wartook Gardens in the garden viewing the bird life, having a swim or just relaxing under a tree with your favourite book.

Great Walks:

For those who want to spend time walking, there are many great walks throughout the Grampians.

Northern Grampians:

  • The popular ones are Hollow Mountain (just over 1 hour return)
  • Mt Stapylton about 2 hours return from Mt Zero Picnic area
  • Mt Zero about 1½ hours return.
  • Beehive Falls 1 hr return from Beehive Falls car park
  • Briggs Bluff continues past Beehive Falls 5 hours return from Beehive Falls car park
  • MacKenzie River walk 3 hours return

Wonderland Walks:

  • Wonderland Loop [Great day out 4-5 hours] start in Halls Gap
  • The Pinnacle from Wonderland Car Park 2 and a half hours
  • The Pinnacle from Sundial Car Park 2 hours
  • Mt Rosea Loop 4-5 hours from Rosea Campground (Silverband Road)
  • Boronia Peak 2-3 hours from Tandara Rd Car Park

In the Spring, times may vary depending upon your interest in wildflowers. Most of the best displays of wildflowers are in the Northern and Western Grampians.

A walk in the Black Range

There are many surrounding towns and villages, galleries, craft-shops, and other attractions of the Grampians National Park that can be visited during your stay at Wartook Gardens.
